Our purpose
“To assist Seniors in achieving their best possible quality of life by developing and maintaining their mental and social health and well-being.”
From Our President - Mike Flavell
This month we acknowledge with sadness the death of a founding member of U3A North Canterbury, Fiona Roberts. Teacher, equestrian, stalwart for the environment amongst many things. And with this we express our awareness that we lose another person who has added to what can be called the cultural capital of North Canterbury. We will miss her special contribution to our well-being.
Death reminds us all of the tasks we wish to achieve before time or illness prevents this, and and the decreasing amount of time still available to us. I notice an increasing outrage within myself toward the warmongers around the planet who expend others’ lives while indulging delusions of grandeur.
I like Emerson’s/Stanley’s expression of the measurement of our humanity.
To laugh often and much,
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends
to appreciate beauty,
to find the best in others,
to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition;
to know that one life has breathed easier because you lived here.
This is to have succeeded.
